Twitter announces its video streaming app, Periscope, is now available on Android devices.
Twitter today announced Periscope, an app that streams live video directly to your Twitter feed, is available on Android devices. “After a debut on iOS early this year, the company’s Android app development under former Twitter for Android developer Sara Haider went full-steam on bringing Periscope to Google’s mobile OS,” reports TechCrunch.
With more than one billion active monthly users, Android users represent the lion’s share for handheld devices – iOS has under half the users as Android with 470 million users.
Upon Periscope’s Android launch, new features including the “return to broadcast feature” where users can jump back into a video stream are available. Like Periscope’s iOS app, users can share live streams straight from their phone. Streams are either public – Periscope tweets a URL to a user’s Twitter followers – or private available to a selected group of users.
Twitter acquired Periscope in spring 2015 for around $100 million, according to Wall Street Journal. The acquisition reflects the micro-blogging website’s effort to up the ante with its video capabilities.
Periscope has already gained the attention of big brands like Spotify, Mountain Dew, Red Bull, and DKNY, reports Adweek.
