All-New Google News App Now Available on iPhone and iPad

Google has released a completely revamped version of its Google News app on the iOS App Store.

The new Google News improves upon the old Newsstand app, and has been designed to compete directly with Apple News.

We covered the major changes to Google News when they were first announced last week, but here is a summary of the key updates:

  • A “For You” section surfaces news articles based on browsing history and utilizes artificial intelligence.
  • A “Headlines” section features non-personalized news articles from around the world, grouped into different categories.
  • A “Favorites” section features news articles based on topics, sources, locations, searches, and stories saved by the user.
  • A “Newsstand” section allows users to follow specific publishers.

It’s important for SEOs and marketers to know that, with the recent update to Google News, Google has ended support for Editors’ Picks feeds and the standout meta tag.

Google says it will share other ways publishers can optimize visibility in Google News in the near future. Going forward there will be no need to use either the Editors’ Picks feature or standout tag.
