Twitter Acquires Gnip, The World’s Largest Provider of Twitter Data

Twitter’s VP of Global Business Development, Jana Messerschmidt, announced today the company has agreed to acquire Gnip, a leading provider of social data and a long-standing Twitter data partner.

We want to make our data even more accessible, and the best way to do that is to work directly with our customers to get a better understanding of their needs.

The announcement states Twitter now delivers more than 500 million Tweets per day, while Gnip has plays a critical role in collecting and digesting public Twitter data and delivering the most essential Tweets to partners. Gnip partnered with Twitter four years ago, and since then have reportedly delivered more than 2.3 trillion Tweets to customers in 42 countries.

Through this acquisition Twitter plans to offer more sophisticated data sets so that developers and businesses can make better use of the content that is shared on Twitter. Twitter intends to continue making their data available to Gnip’s customer base.

In a post announcing the acquisition on their website, Gnip’s Chris Moody states:

Combining forces with Twitter allows us to go much faster and much deeper. We’ll be able to support a broader set of use cases across a diverse set of users including brands, universities, agencies, and developers big and small. Joining Twitter also provides us access to resources and infrastructure to scale to the next level and offer new products and solutions.

Both parties state more information about this acquisition will be shared in the coming months. Until then it appears Gnip will continue to operate under its own branding and Twitter has stated it plans to honor current customer contracts.
