Posting GIFs has proven to be wildly popular on sites like Reddit and Tumblr, soon you might be able to pin GIFs to your favorite boards on social networking site Pinterest. To be more clear you can already technically pin GIFs on Pinterest, but they appear as static images. With this new feature Pinterest is testing the ability to pin GIFs and play them right within your Pinterest feed.
If you’ve ever browsed Tumblr on a mobile device, GIFs on Pinterest will appear much the same way. A small play button will appear in the lower left corner of the image where users can click to play or pause the GIF. Pinterest has confirmed that they are testing this new feature:
We’re always working on ways to help people discover and save the things they love, which can include animated GIFs. We’ve heard from the community that they’d like the ability to post and view GIFs as Pins, so we’re testing ways to make that happen.
Pinterest is quietly rolling out this feature to a number of test users first, including fashion search engine Wantering who first brought it to the attention of others. This is typical of new features added to any social network, a number of test users get access first before being released to the masses.
It has not been confirmed when, or if, all users will get access to this new feature. It’s no secret that the Internet loves GIFs, so we can only hope more users get access to this feature soon. Do you think this will improve the Pinterest experience? Leave a comment and let me know!
