Instagram‘s massive growth continues. The photo- and video-sharing network announced it has surged to 500 million active monthly users. Sixty percent of Instagram’s users, or an incredible 300 million people, now use the app every day.
That means Instagram has 2x more daily active users than Snapchat and Twitter (150 million and 136 million, respectively).
More than 80 percent of Instagram’s user base lives outside of the U.S., and they’ve seen strongest growth in countries like Japan, Germany, France, and Indonesia, according to TechCrunch. More than 95 million images and videos are shared every day, attracting 4.2 billion likes per day.

Instagram has pretty much been adding 100 million new users every 9 months of late. Here’s a quick timeline of how Instagram reached 500 million users, since it was acquired by Facebook for $1 billion in 2012:
- April 29, 2012: 35 million users.
- July 26, 2012: 80 million users.

- Dec. 10, 2014: 300 million users.
- Sept. 22, 2015: 400 million users.
- June 21, 2016: 500 million users.
